Summer Sunblock Guide

Today is the first official day of summer! And thankfully, it actually was a nice day here in Vancouver. It's been an unseasonably cold spring but hopefully, the nice weather decides to stick around and show us what summer fun is really all about.

Now, Karen and Huong like to tan. I am totally the opposite, though. I hate getting dark. And sun exposure causes wrinkles and cancer. When I went to Thailand, my friends were lying on the beach and soaking up the sun. Me? I was sitting under the umbrella. By the way, the beaches are gorgeous so if you've never been, you definitely gotta check them out!

I load up on the sunscreen when I'm headed outdoors. Of course, sunscreen must be applied 30 minutes before you go outside to absorb into the skin. The higher the SPF doesn't mean the protection is higher, it means it provides protection for a longer amount of time.Regardless of the SPF, reapply sunscreen at least every two to three hours and right after you've been sweating a lot or swimming.

If you insist on tanning, please protect your skin with sunscreen! Make sure to get a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA has been dubbed the aging ray because, over time, the dermis damage it does produces wrinkles and pigment changes. UVB, the burning ray, triggers inflammation and dilates blood vessels causing sunburn.

And fyi, you still need sunscreen even on a cloudy day. Eighty percent of UV light zips through the clouds.

Sunblock is so important! In Sweden where I'm from everyone is crazy about sunbathing because we don't see much sun during the year so when it comes we want to "make the most of it".

I only realized how silly it was when I came to New Zealand where the ozone layer is so thin and people take the sun very seriously there.

I don't sunbathe much anymore, and when I do I always use SPF 25+.

I used to be a sun worshipper, spending hours tanning at the beach.

It is s funny how you realized how silly it was in NZ, because that was where I realized this too! I went out for 15 minutes after 6pm, and my nose got so burnt it started peeling.

In Sweden, people use SPF 2-7, which is insanely low! I never sunbathe either anymore, but you're exposed to the sun anyway. I love the La Roche -Posay face sun lotions, they're great!
